CEO and Founder
Martin is a serial entrepreneur with 26 years of experience in the solar, clean-tech and high-tech industries, who has closed business transactions in excess of $5.3B. He founded 8minutenergy, which is now among the largest independent developers of solar PV in the U.S. with a portfolio of more than 5,500 MWs and a track record of 1,500 MWs in executed PPAs.
Martin also developed a 100 MW solar PV module manufacturing plant as Chief Strategy Officer with Advent Solar. Prior to his engagement in renewables, he owned a semiconductor tools company for 10 years, which he sold to Intel in 2001. For six years after the acquisition, Martin served on the executive management team with Intel’s wireless business group.
President and Co-Founder
Tom is president and co-founder of 8minutenergy. He brings over 20 years of executive management experience in large-scale project development, solar and utility power markets, land entitlement, M&A, capital structuring and finance. Tom has led transactions totaling over $5 billion in power purchase agreements and project finance deals.
Prior to co-founding 8minutenergy, Tom was a successful entrepreneur, real estate developer, and project manager for McKinsey & Company in Europe and the U.S. He earned his Ph.D. in physics and astronomy from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech).
Vice President, Land Acquisition and Management
Todd has over 20 years of real estate experience covering the development and finance of projects across various sectors, including energy, residential, industrial, and hospitality. Prior to joining 8minutenergy, Todd served as the Director of Finance and Investments for Probity International Corporation, a developer of mixed-use and luxury hotel projects. He also served as an Associate in the real estate investment banking group for Deutsche Bank Securities. Todd is a licensed real estate broker in California, and holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as an M.B.A. from the Anderson School at UCLA.
Vice President, Development
Deborah has over 9 years of experience in the renewable energy sector concentrated on the development of utility-scale solar projects, and over 16 years of experience successfully managing land development projects. Prior to joining 8minutenergy, Deborah was a Development Manager for WorleyParsons, where she was responsible for helping to develop and permit over 450 MW of utility-scale solar projects on private, state, and federal lands. She was also previously the Senior Forward Planner for America’s largest residential home builder where she successfully obtained land entitlements and permits on aggressive timelines. Deborah spent over 3 years producing environmental documents in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Deborah holds a B.S. in Biology and a M.S. in Environmental Biology from Ohio University, as well as a J.D. from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law.
Vice President, Transmission and Interconnection Planning
Ali is a world-renowned expert and respected scholar on renewable energy with over 20 years of electric utility and electric equipment manufacturing industry experience. He conducted 80,000+ megawatts of renewable generation interconnection studies at the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) as Director of Infrastructure Development, and secured ISO Board approval for over $10 billion for high voltage transmission lines (Sunrise, Tehachapi, Colorado River to Valley, and Ivanpah to El Dorado projects) for the California ISO transmission grid.
Prior to CAISO, Ali held senior management positions with MidAmerican Energy Company, GE Company, Atlantic Nuclear Services and Alberta Power Limited. A Fellow of IEEE (USA) and IET (UK), Ali has authored and published numerous books and technical papers on renewable energy worldwide.
Vice President, Technology
Frank is a solar PV industry veteran with over 23 years of experience in research, manufacturing, sales, business development and management across the PV value chain, including crystalline-silicon wafer, solar cell and PV module technology, starting with industry pioneers like Astropower and Shell Solar. Over the past 13 years, Frank worked for industry leaders including Deutsche Solar, Centrotherm and SCHMID in wafer supply and manufacturing equipment. Frank also ran his own independent consultancy for 4 years and is active in the field of PV module reliability. He is a member of the International Photovoltaic Quality Assurance Task Force (PVQAT), which leads global efforts to craft quality and reliability standards for solar energy technologies.
Frank is a physicist by training and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Freiburg, in conjunction with the renowned Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy, ISE in Freiburg, Germany. Prior to his career in PV, he was also a researcher at two laboratories for “elementary particle research” at Fermilab near Chicago and CERN near Geneva, Switzerland.
Vice President, Finance
Josh has over 15 years of experience in finance, complex transactions, capital markets, and general management. Prior to joining 8minutenergy, Josh was Senior Vice President, Finance and Capital Markets at Recurrent Energy where he was instrumental in building and leading a project finance team that raised $8 billion across all parts of the capital structure while financing nearly 2,000 MW of solar power plants. In 2015, he led a capital plan that resulted in $3.1 billion in investments from a group of leading energy investors. As a result, Josh was named Finance Official of the Year by Project Finance and Risk and was a finalist for the Platt’s Rising Star Award.
Prior to Recurrent Energy, Josh was with Morgan Stanley where he executed over $4 billion of financings for generation and transmission assets as well as highly structured long-term natural gas supply arrangements. Josh holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and BA from the University of Michigan. He serves on the board of DeRose & Appelbaum, a leading Bay Area provider of real estate services and investments.
Vice President, Land Acquisition
Dennis Harper has worked in the energy industry for over 20 years and has an extensive background in real estate, site selection, acquisition, due diligence, mineral rights issues, title clearing, environmental studies, permitting, and site development for renewable and energy projects. Prior to joining 8minutenergy Renewables, Mr. Harper was the Director of Real Estate and Land Acquisitions for Sunpower, where he was responsible for the acquisition and permitting of over 14 large utility-scale solar projects throughout the U.S. Prior to Sunpower, Mr. Harper was the Director of Real Estate and Acquisitions for First Solar where he also completed due diligence and the acquisition of three solar development pipelines, including the former Opti Solar and Edison Mission Energy solar project pipelines. Previously, Mr. Harper was the Manager of Real Estate Services/Acquisitions for Mid-American Energy Holding Company/PacifiCorp. He is a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM), and he is also a member of the Institute of Real Estate Management and a Certified Property Manager (CPM®).
General Counsel and Vice President, Government & Regulatory
Arthur has extensive regulatory, transactional and litigation experience across a broad range of energy sector issues. His legal work has involved negotiating significant and innovative renewable energy power purchase agreements, as well as permitting, financing and assuring transmission for precedent-setting solar power projects. He has also contributed to the development of major renewable energy regulatory and policy frameworks, including California’s Renewables Portfolio Standard and its procurement mechanisms, wholesale energy and capacity markets, and transmission and land use planning initiatives.
Arthur’s prior experience includes serving as Vice President, Regulatory Affairs for BrightSource Energy and as counsel at Pacific Gas & Electric Company, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and several national law firms. Arthur has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee (REEEAC), and has served as President of the Large-scale Solar Association (LSA), Chair of SEIA’s Utility-Scale Power Division, and on the boards of several energy organizations, including the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technology (CEERT).
Vice President, Talent
Karin has extensive experience in project and program management of technology, operations, and people strategy. She has innovated sourcing and recruiting for technology companies, pioneering first-of-its-kind hiring programs to expand the scope of accessible talent and utilizing leading strategies to develop top teams. After the acquisition of CAD-UL by Intel, Karin successfully led the integration of human resources, communication and operations topics of a 65 person team into Intel’s structures.
Karin has guided 8minutenergy’s hiring and talent strategies since the inception of the company. She is passionate about bringing on the best talent and enabling them to perform to their full potential.
Vice President, Global Marketing
Helena has nearly 14 years of experience in international marketing and corporate communications. Prior to 8minutenergy, she served as VP of Marketing for Yingli Americas. As an original member of the management team, Helena was responsible for marketing and branding, as well as spearheading policy and advocacy efforts, and managing the company’s partnerships with the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Soccer Team, and GRID Alternatives.
She entered the solar sector as Director of Marketing Communications for Recurrent Energy, where she helped launch the company shortly after its inception, and was also responsible for policy and customer relations. She has also served as a consultant for SunLink Corporation and Nanosolar. Formerly, Helena worked in the technology sector as Director of MarComm for Laszlo Systems, an open source software company, and she also ran the San Francisco division of a high-tech public relations agency, Greenough Communications. She graduated from Dartmouth College, and was a Bosch Fellow in Erfurt, Germany.
Vice President, Storage Solutions
Steve has more than 30 years of power generation and transmission experience managing the development, sales, design and construction of more than 3,000 MW of energy projects across the globe.
Steve led GE’s storage integration sales effort for utilities and IPP’s across the western US. His previous roles include leading early PV pioneer Power Light’s expansion into Southern California and Arizona, driving SPG Solar’s development into a regional PV EPC champion, and Global Sales VP for semiconductor giant TSMC, building a sales channel to deploy an advanced thin-film PV module across Europe and Africa. Early in his career, Steve was the project manager for Southern California Edison’s 200 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric project.
Vice President, Emerging Markets
Pablo has developed over 2+ GW of renewable projects in Europe and U.S., and pioneered development of solar PV projects in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Panama. Pablo joined 8minutenergy after serving as Country Manager for Gestamp Solar in North America, and as adviser for several institutions in the renewables field. In his prior role, Pablo was responsible for all operations in the U.S. for Gestamp Solar, which included 11 operational projects and a 1+ GW solar pipeline. Previously, Pablo held senior roles at Allco Finance Group (AFG:ASE), where played a key role in setting up one of the first solar investment funds in Europe. He also has experience in wind power development, having worked at BP Alternative Energy (NYSE:BP), and Gamesa Energia (BME:GAM).
Vice President, Corporate Finance
Mario has over 15 years of finance and accounting expertise. Prior to joining 8minutenergy, Mario worked as a Financial Controller for Oracle Corporation, and was involved in more than 35 acquisitions. He has held management positions within publicly traded multi-national corporations, including Resources Global Professionals and Pulte Group. Mario qualified to become a C.P.A. with Ernst & Young, where he served a variety of industries in the advisory and assurance practice for nearly 4 years. Mario is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley with a B.A. in History and Economics.
8minutenergy India - Vice President, South East Asia Corporate Affairs
Rajesh is an industry veteran in project development and corporate affairs with an extensive background in governmental, legal, and regulatory affairs of large-scale thermal power projects. He has been instrumental in business development in the energy markets in India, and in Southeast Asia. Key accomplishments include successfully closing a thermal power plant deal in a SAARC country, as well as developing over 450 MW and spearheading 2,200 Cr. in total investments.
Rajesh is a military veteran, and has served the India Armed Forces in various executive capacities at bases across India for 18 years. He is multilingual, a graduate engineer, and holds a masters in operations.
Vice President, Transmission
Tom is an energy professional with more than 27 years experience in electric transmission planning and operations, energy market compliance, energy storage, and renewable energy generator interconnection. In seven years in the renewable energy industry, Tom has managed interconnection portfolios in excess of 4,000 MW and has overseen the successful interconnection of more than 2,000 MW of renewable energy projects ranging in size from 2.2 MW to 300 MW.
Prior to joining 8minutenergy, Tom was Vice President of Transmission at SunEdison and FirstWind where he oversaw the interconnection of renewable generation projects from Maine to Hawaii. Prior to entering the renewable energy space, Tom worked at Pacific Gas & Electric, the California ISO, and PECO Energy in various positions including transmission operations, energy market compliance, and transmission planning.
Vice President, Storage Integration
Carl has over 40 years of utility industry experience managing energy for California’s sixth largest utility, the Imperial Irrigation District, as the Energy Manager and the Portfolio Management Officer. During his tenure at the utility, Carl initiated strategic project management, implemented processes that saved hundreds of millions in costs, and oversaw the implementation of battery storage projects. As a member of the Geothermal Energy Association board, Carl helped initiate the use of renewable energy as a catalyst for addressing the Salton Sea environmental issues.
Carl is the Vice President of Imperial Valley Development and Storage Integration for 8minutenergy. He oversees the development of renewable projects in Imperial Valley and works with 8minutenergy’s storage team to bring energy storage projects to fruition.
Vice President, Origination
Kurtz has over 20 years of experience in marketing and origination of energy commodities. He has led origination teams in WECC, ERCOT, SPP, FRCC and SERC. Kurtz has negotiated complex power purchase agreements with utilities and independent power producers alike. He has executed physical and financial energy swaps and options, basis swaps, regulatory capacity, tolling agreements and energy management agreements. Prior to joining 8minutenergy, Kurtz worked in Vice President positions in Origination with BP, Constellation, and Calpine.
